ABOUT ANFIELD

Anfield was originally built in 1884 and occupied by Liverpool FC in 1892. The legendary Kop Terrace was rebuilt in 1994 after the Taylor report and became all seated. Today, the Kop holds just over 13,000 seated fans and can on occasions produce a similar noise to that of years ago. In 1998, the new two-tier Anfield Road Stand was opened, increasing the capacity of the ground to 45,362. On Anfield Road are the wrought-iron Bill Shankly Gates. These have the legendary Liverpool phrase, "You'll Never Walk Alone" displayed above them. There is also a statue of the great man near the Club shop. There are plenty of Liverpool hotels within easy reach of the stadium.

The Club offers daily tours of the ground, except Bank Holidays and match days. There is also a museum. Refreshment kiosks sell a wide variety of burgers, hot dogs and pies, including a "Scouse Pie". Away fans are located in the Anfield Road Stand at one end, with just under 2,000 seats, though this can be increased for cup games. This stand is also shared with home supporters, some of whom sit in the small seated tier above the away fans. Fans advise against tickets sold as "restricted view", as it can be difficult to see with people standing in front of you.

There has been much debate regarding the increasing costs of a new 60,000 all-seated stadium, to be located in nearby Stanley Park.

GETTING TO ANFIELD

By Car
The Liverpool ground is located in Anfield Road, postcode L4 0TH. Online maps or the use of a GPS are recommended. For early arrivals, on-street parking is available, otherwise there is secure parking at nearby Goodison Park, though this is expensive. It is recommended to either use public transport or to stay in one of the many hotels near Liverpool FC.

By Public Transport
Trains can be caught from Liverpool Central and Moorfields to Sandhills, met by special Soccerbuses. Fans should request a return to Anfield (even though alighting at Sandhills) as tickets are valid for the Soccerbus and the additional fare is only £1 return as opposed to £1 each way. Liverpool's main railway station in is Lime Street, over three miles from the ground and a little too far to walk. Head for Sandhills / Kirkdale station or take a taxi. Most hotels near Anfield also have good transport links, so getting to them should present few problems.

WHERE TO STAY NEAR ANFIELD

The Beech B&B is a one of the budget Liverpool hotels, within walking distance of Anfield, close to the city centre and Aintree racecourse and only 8 miles from the airport and close to motorways. The Lord Nelson Hotel, in Hotham Street, offers comfortable 2-start city centre accommodation at an affordable price. This is within walking distance of a wide selection of restaurants and bars and Anfield is easily accessible by taxi. Amongst the Liverpool hotels a little further away (and more expensive) is the Marriott Liverpool City Centre. This 4-star hotel is the heart of the vibrant city centre, famous for its nightlife.
